In Spring 2023, The Loyalty Foundation launched the first-ever esports program for Newark City Schools—beginning with The Circuits at the Newark School of Data Science & Information Technology. Since then, the program has expanded to include East Side High School and Technology High School, strengthening access to competitive esports and STEM learning across the district.

We are thrilled to announce that on Saturday, November 23, The Circuits won the 2025 Garden State Esports Rocket League State Championship for Group 1 and Group 2—sweeping the finals against the top scholastic teams in New Jersey.

Below, we've reposted the official press release from the Newark Board of Education.

NEWARK, N.J. – The Newark School of Data Science & Information Technology (NSDSIT) has made Newark Public Schools history. This weekend at the Garden State Esports (GSE) League Championships at Georgian Court University, the NSDSIT Circuits captured the 2025 Garden State Esports Rocket League State Championship for Group 1 and Group 2, marking the first Esports state title in both the school’s and the district’s history.

The Circuits delivered a dominant and undefeated season from start to finish. After going 6–0 in the regular season (18–1 set record), the team swept every single playoff match, showcasing extraordinary discipline, skill, and teamwork.

The championship marks a remarkable rise for the program. Just two years ago, in their first season competing in the GSE league, NSDSIT finished 0–7 without a single game win. Today, they stand atop the state as undefeated champions.

“This historic championship is another example of what happens when Newark students are given the opportunity, the coaching, and the support to pursue their passions at the highest level,” said Superintendent León. “The Circuits didn’t just win, they dominated. They did it through teamwork, discipline, and an unwavering belief in each other. I congratulate our players, Coach Lima, and the entire Newark School of Data Science & Information Technology community for bringing home the first Esports state title in Newark Public Schools history.”

“Our students continue to prove that greatness lives in every corner of this district: on the field, in the classroom, and now on the virtual competitive stage,” said Board of Education President Hasani K. Council. “I could not be prouder of the Circuits for making Newark Public Schools history and showing the entire state what our scholars are capable of. Congratulations to Coach Lima and our remarkable student-athletes for this incredible achievement.”

“Two years ago, our students joined the GSE league without a single match win. Today, they are undefeated state champions,” said Dr. Lianna Summey, Principal of the Newark School of Data Science & Information Technology. “Their journey shows what resilience, practice, and determination can achieve. I am beyond proud of Jeremiah, Dylan, and every player on this roster. With Coach Lima’s leadership and our students’ drive, the Circuits have set a new standard for excellence at the Newark School of Data Science & Information Technology.”
